Free Science PLD for New Zealand Schools

Are you looking to enhance the earth and environmental science education at your school and build teacher confidence in delivering it?

Look no further!

I am a professional development (PLD) facilitator with over 30 years of teaching and science communication experience.

I am affiliated with a diverse group of scientists and educators who together come under the umbrella of Field Based STEM.
Our work is funded by the New Zealand Ministry of Education and we can help school principals with your funding application

My specialisation (“the Geology Guy”) is on hands-on field and inquiry-based earth and environmental science activities.
I operate throughout Aotearoa.

I offer support for your school’s science program including:
• curriculum planning workshops with principals and teachers,
• demonstration lessons in the classroom,
• the creation of investigative field trips,
• design of hands-on learning experiences,
• one-on-one PLD with teachers,
• ongoing PLD support.

Examples of science topics include:
• Geology – Our Plate Boundary, Earthquakes, Volcanoes, Rocks and Fossils, Antarctica
• Ecology – Native Forest Ecology, Secrets of the Skeleton (Adaptations), Weather and the Water Cycle, Climate
• Physical Geography – Landforms, Continents and Oceans
• Field Trips for powerful learning experiences:
A single day in the outdoors can open up a world of on-going learning. I help with every aspect, from scoping out locations near your school, coming up with age-appropriate inquiry activities and working alongside the teachers to excite the students with their learning. I frequently lead teacher-only days in the field, as well as demonstration trips with students at every year level.

The normal range of funded hours for PLD is between 80 and 200 hours, depending on the number of staff in your school who will benefit which gives you lots of options to set up a programme that will perfectly suit your schools PLD needs!
